Knowing Your Guns - Torture Testing

Owning a gun is one thing. Knowing how to shoot it is another. Knowing how to take it apart is a level above that. Knowing approximately how many bullets your gun can fire before it has issues is the next level. When people think of torture testing guns, they think of beating them up, throwing them in mud, sand, dirt, etc. This is a form of torture testing, but I feel it is a bit extreme. If you want to know a gun's reliability you do need to subject it to some torture testing. My version of torture testing involves stripping the gun down and thoroughly cleaning it. Then reassemble it and start putting rounds through it, all the while keeping track of how many you shoot. Eventually your gun will get to the point that there is too much carbon and other gunk built up that it will stop feeding, fail to eject, fail to move the slide into full battery, light primer strikes, etc. This is the maximum potential of your gun in its current configuration. Knowing this limit not only will help you avoid being caught out shooting without your cleaning supplies when you need them most, but could also help in the event you need to defend your life.
